The TwinCity Perl Workshop 2011 (held on 4th–5th November in Vienna and Bratislava) has announced a call for papers for talks and workshops. They would like to hear about your topics concerning the Perl family of languages and related topics. The deadline for submissions is October 15th.

The London Perl Workshop (the United Kingdom’s Perl Workshop) has opened its website and call for speakers. On the website you can login (you’ll need an Act login), register and submit a talk. The workshop will be on 12th November at the University of Westminster’s New Cavendish Campus.
The Theme this year is Industrial Strength Perl, and will focus on the manner in which Perl is used in the commercial world and the strength of Perl for development in an enterprise environment. You can use any aspect of Perl such as Camelia, Rakudo, Raptor, etc. Speakers are invited to talk on any subject that relates to this theme, though we will also accept talks on other subjects.
The Perl Foundation is looking for companies and individuals to donate to its Perl 5 Core Maintenance fund.
The Perl Foundation has provided a series of grants targeted at improving the Perl 5 core. The original funding as provided by Booking.com is now almost depleted, but The Perl Foundation is committed to raising new funding to help continue and expand this important venture. We are hoping to further fund Dave Mitchell’s work and to fund new work on the core by Nicholas Clark.
Larger sponsors will receive specific mention of their contribution to this fund on the Sponsor’s page under the fund’s section, donations of $1,000 dollars or more will result in the sponsor’s logo being used and the organisation (of choice) being credited on a weekly report. Perl 5.12.4 is now available to download from CPAN mirrors around the world.
Perl 5.12.4 is the fifth stable release of Perl 5.12.
This release contains bug fixes, build fixes and documentation updates. It should be fully backward compatible with Perl 5.12.3.
Perl 5.12.4 is a recommended upgrade for all users of Perl 5.12.

Perl 5.12.4 represents approximately 5 months of development since Perl 5.12.3 and contains approximately 200 lines of changes across 11 files from 8 authors.
The Perl 5.12 branch is now an older stable branch. The current stable branch is 5.14, and all users of 5.12 are recommended to upgrade to 5.14 when it is convenient. Perl 5.14.2 is expected to be released in mid-September 2011, followed by Perl 5.14.3 in mid-December. The next major release of Perl 5, 5.16.0 should appear in spring 2012.

Apple recently released Xcode 4 – their development IDE and toolkit, which is the easiest way to install a compiler on an OSX machine, this version does not contain the PPC assembler target. Unfortunately the version of Perl shipped with OSX was compiled with the ‘-arch ppc’ flags, this means you can not build or install any XS based CPAN modules.
The recommended solution is to stop using the system Perl. By far the easiest way to do this is to install Perlbrew (which does not use XS, so can still be installed under Xcode 4), this has the added bonus that it allows you to switch between different versions of Perl very quickly – ideal for checking your code works consistently.
Arguably this is an Apple bug, but it is not known if or when they will fix it, so it’s best to take a proactive approach. Installing Perlbrew really is easy and creates a much cleaner development environment.

The next deadline for the Google Summer of Code is April 22, when all mentors must be signed up, students must be matched to a mentor, and student scores must be assigned.
The Enlightened Perl Organization‘s Send-a-Newbie initiative is seeking donations to send attendees, new to a large conference, to YAPC::EU::2011 in Riga, Latvia from August 15-17. They accept any size of donation, though large donors (£100+) can choose to have a company logo and link on the site.
