Perl QA Hackathon 2012: Last call for participation

The Perl QA Hackathon 2012 is taking place from Friday, March 30th to Sunday, April 1st 2012 in Paris, France. Attendance is free. Attendees work on a wide variety of tools for the benefit of Perl and all who use it. The more people they have present, the more Perl will improve. Projects on the itinerary include the Perl build toolchain and many tools around CPAN.

Registration will close on January 31st, 2012, so signup sooner rather than later.

You can also propose other people who should be invited. As with past years, they aim to fund the travel and accommodation costs for those who cannot otherwise get funding.

Sponsoring the event is not reserved to organizations and corporations:if you think the Hackathon is useful to the Perl community, but cannot attend yourself, you can still contribute to the success of the event by making a donation. Even small donations will help and would be greatly appreciated.

Perl Team Wins W3C competition

A team from the Brazilian Perl Mongers has won a prestigious Latin America web app competition, Desarrollando América Latina, in association with W3C.

The challenge was to build an application in 30 hours, using open data and open source tools. Of the 47 teams and only one of them used Perl, .

Perl Weekly reaches 2000 subscribers

The Perl Weekly newsletter, first sent out on 1st August 2011 to 15 subscribers has since grown steady and on 16th November it passed 2000 subscribers.

Perl Weekly is a curated newsletter sent out once a week, on Monday morning (European time). It contains 10-15 links to the most interesting Perl related news and blog posts of the previous week, each with a few lines of comment that help the reader know what can be expected from the link.

It is especially aimed at people who want to keep an eye on the development in Perl, CPAN and the Perl community in general but who don’t have time to read all the news items, blogs and tweets the Perl community generates.

Perl Nights opens for a public beta

Perl Nights is a new social networking site for Perl built to emulate the venerable but ageing Perl Monks site, but using aXML and PSGI/Plack.

The full source code to Perl Nights will be available in the Castle Blueprints section once the beta period is over and all features are complete and bug free.

Belgian Perl Workshop 2011

This is now very soon, so please register your presence and talk submissions as soon as possible via the conference site.

As usual the entrance to the workshop is free.

The TwinCity Perl Workshop 2011 (held on 4th–5th November in Vienna and Bratislava) has announced a call for papers for talks and workshops. They would like to hear about your topics concerning the Perl family of languages and related topics. The deadline for submissions is October 15th.

LPW2011: Dates and Call for Speakers

The London Perl Workshop (the United Kingdom’s Perl Workshop) has opened its website and call for speakers. On the website you can login (you’ll need an Act login), register and submit a talk. The workshop will be on 12th November at the University of Westminster’s New Cavendish Campus.

The Theme this year is Industrial Strength Perl, and will focus on the manner in which Perl is used in the commercial world and the strength of Perl for development in an enterprise environment. You can use any aspect of Perl such as Camelia, Rakudo, Raptor, etc. Speakers are invited to talk on any subject that relates to this theme, though we will also accept talks on other subjects.

Perl 5 Core Maintenance Fund

The Perl Foundation is looking for companies and individuals to donate to its Perl 5 Core Maintenance fund.

The Perl Foundation has provided a series of grants targeted at improving the Perl 5 core. The original funding as provided by Booking.com is now almost depleted, but The Perl Foundation is committed to raising new funding to help continue and expand this important venture. We are hoping to further fund Dave Mitchell’s work and to fund new work on the core by Nicholas Clark.

Larger sponsors will receive specific mention of their contribution to this fund on the Sponsor’s page under the fund’s section, donations of $1,000 dollars or more will result in the sponsor’s logo being used and the organisation (of choice) being credited on a weekly report. Perl 5.12.4 is available

Perl 5.12.4 is now available to download from CPAN mirrors around the world.

Perl 5.12.4 is the fifth stable release of Perl 5.12.

This release contains bug fixes, build fixes and documentation updates. It should be fully backward compatible with Perl 5.12.3.

Perl 5.12.4 is a recommended upgrade for all users of Perl 5.12.

You can find a full list of changes in the file “perl5124delta.pod”

Perl 5.12.4 represents approximately 5 months of development since Perl 5.12.3 and contains approximately 200 lines of changes across 11 files from 8 authors.

The Perl 5.12 branch is now an older stable branch. The current stable branch is 5.14, and all users of 5.12 are recommended to upgrade to 5.14 when it is convenient. Perl 5.14.2 is expected to be released in mid-September 2011, followed by Perl 5.14.3 in mid-December. The next major release of Perl 5, 5.16.0 should appear in spring 2012.
